The Challenge:
The new furnishings in this living room and adjoining dining
room had to accommodate a variety of gatherings from intimate
dinner parties to large club meetings. Although we were starting
with an antique dining suite and music cabinet, the client did
not want a traditional look. |
The Vision:
The layout in the living area would be designed to allow for
flexibility and overflow from the dining space. We would create
an eclectic look by mixing in some contemporary pieces with simple,
classic lines. |
The Process:
Contemporary side tables and lamps play off a traditional sofa,
club chair, and ottoman. Modern occasional chairs were given
a traditional touch with an antique gold finish. Placed in the
opening between the rooms, they are easily moved to allow the
dining table to extend fully. A drop-leaf table used as a console
can also be used for serving or dining. In place of the usual
coffee table, a set of custom modern nesting offers even more
flexibility. The quiet neutral scheme desired by the client really
didn't work with the natural light in this room: instead, we
used accents of vibrant reds and rusts against a neutral backdrop.
Gorgeous bronze quilted silk drapery and complementary bold Oriental
rugs unify the living and dining areas. |
The Result:
The spaces work beautifully together both visually and functionally.
They easily accommodate parties of 18 for sit-down dinners, and
even more for meetings. The colour scheme is dramatic rather
than understated, but, to quote the client, "I didn't know
it, but this was exactly what I wanted." |
