The Challenge:
To take a living room with early 1990's décor, update
it, and make it more inviting for everyday use. Since the house
is open-concept and the couple wasn't ready to work on the adjoining
spaces, the existing pink / green / cream colour scheme was to
be retained, yet freshened up. The project was to evolve over
a few years as money became available, but costs were still to
be controlled. |
The Vision:
We saw this room as a quiet cozy space to read and listen to
music, in addition to functioning well for entertaining six.
We would make the room look and feel fresher by concentrating
on the green and cream and slowly eliminating the pink that formerly
dominated. And recycling pieces whenever possible would keep
costs down. |
The Process:
To give the couple more reasons to use the room, we designated
the existing buffet as a bar and stereo cabinet, and converted
the unused fireplace to gas. The uncomfortable sectional sofa
was replaced with a large cushy sofa for him and a custom chaise
for her. The room was finally painted 3 years after we started,
and draperies were hung soon after. Inexpensive accents have
been, and continue to be, added. |
The Result:
This sunny, high-ceilinged space feels garden fresh with its
green walls. Dressing the windows in multiple layers of fabric
softly filters the extreme summer sun, and adds warmth in the
winter, while making the view into the room elegant and dramatic.
The space now draws in its owners regularly. |
