The Challenge:
This couple wanted to be able to watch movies with their guests
in their family room, but its long, narrow configuration and
multiple doorways created layout problems. How to accommodate
seating for 8 for comfortable TV viewing while still focusing
on the fireplace? |
The Vision:
Most of the furniture would have to go along the long walls to
maximize seating capacity. The only way to do this would be to
block off the French doors, leaving access to the patio from
the kitchen only. With a partial wall dividing the family room
from the kitchen, we would have to choose our finishes with a
view to unifying the two spaces. |
The Process:
An oxblood leather sectional sofa accommodates most of our seating
requirements. The long arm of the sectional runs in front of
the French doors and faces a custom-made cherry-stained entertainment
armoire opposite. (Glare on the TV screen is prevented by closing
the blinds.) Facing the fireplace and running parallel to the
half-wall is the short arm of the sectional, which also serves
as a chaise for recumbent TV viewing. A fabric-covered console
behind it adds a cheery punch of pattern and offers a stage for
accessories framed by beautifully detailed support columns. A
pair of sumptuous recliners flank the fireplace, while a pair
of upholstered storage boxes act as coffee table, ottomans, or
additional seating as required. Underfoot, a soft gold Oriental
rug lightens the dark tones of the furnishings. To keep it all
from being too predictable, we hung a number of pieces from the
client's collection of contemporary art, reframed with simple
rustic mouldings. |
The Result:
The rich, dark leather, paisley fabrics, and wood tones of the
furniture we selected complement the sand and cherry tones of
the adjoining kitchen perfectly. We created not merely a functional
TV room, but a welcoming refuge. |
