The Challenge:
With the kids gone and the purchase of a new larger TV, the couple
decided to re-decorate this basement family room from scratch.
They wanted to create a hi-tech media room that still felt warm
and inviting. |
The Vision:
Instead of hiding the TV and surround sound components, we would
showcase them. Comfortable viewing of both the TV and the fire
would be provided by a large sectional with a chaise component.
The couple's classic Eames chair would be kept and set the tone
for the new decor. |
The Process:
The TV was turned into a focal point by placing it on an off-black
custom-made cabinet; flanking front speakers were perched on
stands to give them a sculptural quality. This is balanced on
the opposite wall with a black shelf behind the sofa to hold
accessories and rear speakers. Acoustics were improved by selecting
softer surfaces for the upholstery and putting drapery on the
window. A collection of remote controls is given pride of place
on a specially designated table set next to the best seat in
the house. |
The Result:
The ultrasuede upholstery, plush carpet, and muted colour palette
impart a hushed atmosphere, while punches of red liven it up.
Stainless and chrome accents pick up the TV's hi-tech feel, counterbalanced
by a selection of handcrafted and organic objects. Altogether
an adult space! |
