The Process:
We first assessed the client's wardrobe and storage requirements,
and designed and commissioned closet organizers and built-in
cabinetry to fit her particular needs. The second bedroom (not
shown) was thus transformed from a junk room with a mattress
on the floor into a tidy functional space, with a wall bed, desk,
shelving and concealed storage.
This in turn allowed us to pare down the dining room furniture
to a round glass table and 4 chairs, comfortable enough to encourage
lingering over dinner. To make up for the lack of light in this
windowless niche, we mirrored the back wall, adding sparkle and
opening up the space. A serving cart located next to the kitchen
peninsula substitutes for the dining table as a catch-all surface
when not being used for entertaining.
The "living room" allowed for a sofa and TV and
not much more. We opted for a generous sofa/chaise combination
that extends past the minimal available wall space. A narrow
étagère behind it both disguises the overhang and
turns an odd space into a focal point. A dining room buffet,
re-purposed as a TV stand, offers additional storage. Also multifunctional
are the storage ottoman/tray table and floor lamp/side table.
While a quiet colour palette of beiges and soft blues sets
a calming tone throughout, for the master bedroom a feminine
wallpaper was selected as a foil for more masculine dark wood
furniture and charcoal bedding. Glimpsed through the open bedroom
door, the vignette atop the armoire and its floral backdrop become
part of the living room décor.
As a finishing touch, we added some pizzazz to the open kitchen
with a contemporary stone and glass mosaic backsplash and pendant
lighting.
