The Process:
When designing a kitchen, the first priority is to maximize function.
Fortunately, in this case by maximizing function we were able
to maximize decorative impact as well. We reconfigured the layout
from an 'L' to a 'U' shape, relocating the sink, dishwasher,
and stove to the outside walls, and adding efficient corner cabinets.
This not only increased storage capacity, it also created a long
stretch of uninterrupted counter between the clean-up and cooking
zones, permitting two people to work in tandem. We made this
area a focal point by installing glass-fronted upper cabinets
for display, anchored at either end by custom open storage units.
Safety considerations forced us to allow for a narrow counter
space between the stove and the door to the dining room. Even
this tiny area was made both useful, with a shallow storage cupboard
below, and decorative, with open display shelving above.
The homeowner wished to reuse her old, but still working,
almond appliances. To play them down, we selected a matching
paint finish for the upper cabinets, adding a dark hand-glazed
detail for pizzazz. As an unexpected twist in such a small kitchen,
we used a medium cherry finish on the lower cabinets, injecting
a note of formality. A granite countertop and simple tile backsplash
bridge the tonal divide between the two cabinet colours.
