The Challenge:
To create a stylish and practical bedroom for a college student
that would suit all her current needs and still work for her
when she leaves home. |
The Vision:
We would create custom-made modular furniture with versatility
in mind, using dark woods, metallic accents, and simple lines
for longevity. White hotel-style linens would complement our
clean, classic look, while a retro floral fabric would inject
a note of fun and femininity. |
The Process:
We used height to our advantage, designing tall storage pieces,
even stacking a cupboard unit above the headboard. An awkward
niche in front of the closet was made useable by removing the
closet doors and replacing them with drapery, leaving room for
a small dressing table. A huge curved desktop provides a large
work surface without blocking access to the dressing area; with
its quirky hutch and flanking window treatments, it creates a
strong focal point to balance the tall cabinets opposite. We
placed the TV and stereo at the foot of the bed on a rolling
stand that could also serve as a bench or coffee table in the
future. And for comfortable viewing, plush cushions were attached
to the front of the headboard with velcro to allow for easy cleaning
or re-upholstering, in keeping with our dual mission of functionality
and versatility. |
The Result:
An unqualified "wow" from our client and her friends. |
